- When does each semester start at Zhejiang Gongshang University?
At ZJGSU, each academic year is divided into two semesters. The Fall
Semester usually starts on September 1st, and the Spring Semester starts on
different dates that depend on the lunar calendar. In particular, it is
related to the date of our
Spring Festival/Chinese New Year and usually starts in late February or early March.

- What documents must be submitted to apply for admission to a Bachelor
degree program?
Most of the Bachelor degree courses in China are delivered in Chinese, and
this is also true at ZJGSU.
The required documents are
- Completed application form (ApplicationForm_DegreeCourses.doc,
ApplicationForm_ChineseLanguageCourse.doc)
- high school graduation certificate and course transcripts
- HSK (the Chinese proficiency test) score: Level 4 for liberal
arts; level 3 for other majors. Regarding the HSK, lease visit
http://www.hanban.edu.cn/en_hanban/index.php.
- a CV with a cover letter
- a personal statement
- a bank statement or financial guarantee from your guarantor or
your guardian
If you are interested in the bachelor program, but have not obtained an
HSK certificate yet, please contact us to enroll in our Chinese
Language Course. It takes you about nine to fifteen months for a
beginner to reach the required level, but of course it depends on how hard you
work

recommendation.
- What documents must be submitted to apply for admission to a Master degree program or Ph.D
program?
The required documents are:
- Completed application form (ApplicationForm_DegreeCourses.doc,
ApplicationForm_ChineseLanguageCourse.doc)
- Undergraduate transcripts for Master applicants, and undergraduate
transcripts AND Master program transcripts for Ph.D. applicants
- two letters of recommendation (if not employed) or three letters of recommendation
(if employed)
- personal statement with curriculum vitae
- Financial statement or financial guarantee from your guarantor or your
guardian
- TOEFL score of 550 for non-native English speakers if the graduate program
is in English or HSK (the Chinese proficiency test) score of Level 4 for liberal
arts or level 3 for other majors. Regarding HSK,

Note: A FREE Chinese language course is available to admitted international
students for one year. However, such students must initially pay the tuition upon arrival at our
campus. It is then refundable upon your successful completion of the program.

- Are there any Master or Ph. D. programs at ZJGSU in English?
Yes, there are. The graduate programs of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics,
International Trade, Law, Food Science and Business Administration are conducted
in English. We may help you to contact your professors if you have
decided what you will major in at ZJGSU. Even if all the courses in your Master
program or PHD program are delivered in English, it is strongly recommend that
you learn the Chinese language and culture to live comfortably on our campus.
- Is there any financial support or scholarships available to international
students?
Yes, as stated at http://www.zjgsu.edu.cn/english/appform.php, we offer strong
financial support to international students admitted to our Master or PHD
programs in the form of English teaching assistantships in the College of
Foreign Languages and research assistantships from academic supervisors in
the College of Food Science.
Please note the following points:
- We award English teaching assistantships to international students on a semester-by-semester basis according to the international student's English proficiency test score, such as TOEFL, IELTS, academic performance, and the score on an interview conducted by phone or online at MSN with our staff. We waive the English proficiency test score for native speakers of English.
- The amount of financial support from the English teaching assistantship is RMB18000 per academic year, and the English teaching assistant is paid on a monthly basis. Note that the student is required to pay tuition in advance.
- The renewal of the English teaching assistantship depends on the evaluation
reports at the end of each semester from your supervisor in the College of
Foreign Languages and the students you teach.
- Native speakers of English and outstanding English teaching assistants
in our Spoken English Promotion Project(SEPP) enjoy priority in receiving English teaching assistantships.
- If your performance is particularly outstanding, we may assign you to teach English on a regular basis to a class taking English for credit. In that case, the amount of financial support you receive can exceed RMB18000 per academic year.

- How long does a Master or PhD program last at ZJGSU?
The Master program usually lasts from two and a half years (full-time) to four
years (part-time) and the PhD lasts from 3 years (full-time) to 6 years
(part-time). Of course, the length of the course depends on how hard you work.
- Do I have to learn the Chinese language before I can be admitted to your
degree program?
Yes. As stated above, international students MUST learn the Chinese language for
one year and acquire Level 4 before they can be admitted to any bachelor
programs at ZJGSU. ZJGSU provides the international students with an intensive
Chinese language course. Even if all the courses in your Master program or PHD
program are delivered in English, it is strongly recommended that you learn the
Chinese language and culture for interaction with our academic community on
campus and with the local Chinese community off campus.

campus. It is then refundable upon your successful completion of the program.
- Do I have to have a medical check-up and pay for medical insurance in
China?
Yes, a medical check-up is required upon arrival for each international student
who is going to stay in China longer than one year, and it is a strict
requirement no matter which kind of medical check-up the student may have had before his
or her entry to China.
Each student is fully responsible for his or her own health. Therefore
medical/health insurance is required upon arrival on our campus. The
International Education Center of ZJGSU will help you with the application
procedure.
- Where will I stay when studying at ZJGSU?
ZJGSU has two campuses, the Jiao Gong Lu Campus and the Xiasha Campus. The
International House at the Jiao Gong Lu Campus has about 40 apartments for
international students. Each apartment has three bedrooms, one sitting room, one
toilet and one bath room. The apartments are equipped with hot water,
telephones, televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, air-conditioners and
access to the Internet. The apartments at the International House are mainly for
international students who take Chinese Language Courses. The Guest House at the
Xiasha Campus provides double-bed rooms for international students in degree
programs or English teaching assistants in our Spoke English Promotion Project
(SEPP). Each room is shared by two students and is equipped with two beds, hot water, access to the Internet, heat, air conditioning and television.

If you can find an apartment off campus, you can stay off campus. However, as a new
comer and a stranger, we recommend that you live on campus for at least half a
year before you move off campus.
- How much must I pay for tuition?
- Undergraduate Program
Liberal Arts, Economics, Business, Law: 15,000 RMB per year
Science, Engineering: 18,000 RMB per year
Arts: 22,000 RMB per year
- Master Program
22,000 RMB per year
- Ph.D Program
24,000 RMB per year
- Non-degree students
The same as the equivalent degree courses.

- How much shall I have to pay for my accommodation and food?
Accommodation fee (Jiao Gong Lu Campus): RMB30 per day (one bedroom in a
three-bedroom apartment)
Accommodation fee (Jiao Gong Lu Campus): RMB2400 per year (shared twin-bed room)
Food expense:
It usually costs about RMB 500 per month for a regular Chinese student. However,
food expenses always depend on the quality and quantity of the food you eat.
- When and how shall I pay for my tuition and accommodation?
Your tuition and accommodation fee are payable upon arrival. We accept RMB cash or
bank checks.
- When should I apply for admission to ZJGSU?
Degree Programs: September 1 to May 31.
Short-term program: any time.
Chinese language course: any time.
